When prepping to go on holiday, some people have a knack in knowing what to take with them. Others, however, do not. Instead of having to make a list every time you pack a bag, we’ve drawn up all the essential items you need to take on holiday with you.

Some items may be more important than others and some you personally might not need at all. Feel free to use this as a rough guide and remove/add items if you so wish.

Documents

Perhaps the most important items of all are your documents. Without these, you won’t be able to have a holiday at all so ensure you have all of the following before you travel:

  • Passport
  • Travel insurance
  • Tickets/booking confirmations
  • Bank cards, foreign currency and/or travel card

As an additional note, it is generally a good idea to note down the numbers to all the places you’re staying. Also, remember to give them to someone you trust so they may contact them in an emergency.

Clothing

While there are certain items of clothing you could always buy when you reach your destination, there are some essential items you may need just to be on the safe side. This very much depends on where you’re going, but it’s always best to have a few “non-seasonal” clothes wherever you go.

Also, if you’re worried about small essential items that you can’t pack, you can always wear it while you travel:

  • Sweatshirt/cardigan/light jacket
  • Trousers
  • Shoes
  • Lightweight evening outfits
  • Swimwear
  • Underwear
  • Socks
  • Nightwear

Toiletries and Medicine

You never know what may happen when you’re abroad, so it is always best if you take some essential toiletries and medication with you. Again, some can be bought while on holiday, but to save the fuss you should make sure you have the following:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Small roll-on deodorant
  • Hairbrush/accessories
  • Make-up if necessary
  • Razor
  • Small moisturiser with SPF
  • Diarrhoea treatment
  • Paracetamol
  • Antiseptic cream
  • Plasters
  • Personal medication
  • Sunscreen (if you’re going somewhere hot)

Even if you can buy sunscreen wherever you’re going, it’s always best to bring some with you as the UV standards may not be the same as those in the UK.

Other

The following items may not fall into the other categories but they’re all just as important to take with you on holiday.

  • Mobile phone and charger
  • Camera and charger
  • Travel adaptor
  • Sunglasses
  • Reading material

Travelling with kids?

If you’re travelling with children, it’s a good idea to make more room in your travel luggage to accommodate for this. There are also a couple more essential items to bring including plenty of sunscreen, children strength medicine and plenty for them to do on the flight.
