For some of us, the idea of flying can be a nerve-wracking experience and usually it’s hard to ignore those feelings. This is why we’ve come up with a few useful tips to help you stay calm during your flight.

1) Bring Plenty of Distractions

A distracted mind finds less reasons to become anxious, and the more occupied you are the easier it is to forget you’re on a plane at all. Books, music, headphones… Anything you can get away with taking on board a plane to distract yourself with is definitely a good idea.

2) Try Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises and meditation techniques are an effective way of calming an anxious mind. If you feel it all getting too much, counting your breathing is a great way to bring you into the present.

When it comes to anxiety, our heads are always filled with what might happen when we should be focusing on the here and now. Breathing exercises allow us to do this.

3) Drink Plenty of Water

Avoid alcohol and caffeine when flying as these will do you no favours with your nerves. Instead, drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.

Your brain works much better and can think much more clearly when you’re properly hydrated. The cabin crew will be more than happy to provide you with some.

4) Talk to Somebody

Even if you don’t know the person sitting next to you, talking to them could help calm your nerves, and the calmer they feel the better.

You can even talk to a member of the cabin crew who will be pleased to listen to you. Also, don’t forget to ask them for some tips.

5) Focus on the Positives

To anchor your mind in the present, think of the positive side to your experience. You’re going on holiday! You’re taking a well-earned break. You’ll be there soon, perhaps an hour or less. It’ll all be over within a matter of minutes.
